I came to this book via The Moor by Laurie R. King and while I enjoyed it, it is kind of a dark book. I don't want to say more and spoil things. It does go with reality I guess because not all is rainbows and laughter in this world but it was a little bit too nitty gritty for me.

The BroomSquire Sabine BaringGould 9781358881985 Books Reviews

Very useful information provided through the use of actual names of the families and locations, churches and pubs. It has helped fill in some details of family connections.
I downloaded The Broom-Squire with a little doubt as to its enjoyability, for it only had one review at the time (well-rated as it was), and I had previously read a work by Baring-Gould that had not managed to keep my interest. Not to mention that older books, as much as I prefer to read them over ones more recently written, are often of dubious quality when it comes to formatting and content. But I decided to download it anyways, seeing as it cost nothing and would be easy to remove from my device.

Very glad that I chose to read it. The characters and situations are compelling (your heart will move for Mehetabel and Jonas will evoke disgust), the writing is coherent (while still retaining the feel of its time period, the twenty-first century reader will not be jarred) and in some places particularly beautiful (and for any words not familiar to a modern lexicon, context and/or the dictionary function of the kindle can fix that lack of comprehension).

It was a quick read, which this reader finished in a day. The Broom-Squire is one of those books where even a slow reader will feel time fly by as they are drawn into the lives of the characters.

Plus, it's free, so is there any reason not download it and give it a chance?
This is one excellent story of a people and a time period that will hold your interest from beginning to end. Superstitions run wild in this story because of the lack of knowledge of the characters. I was so surprised by this book and if were written today it would be a best seller over night.
Because it was written by the author of the words to "Onward Christian Soldier," it caught my attention. Great lessons on character. It was also amazing to see the changes we have in society a woman had no choice but to stay with her husband even if he,,, but then I'd give away the story!! Good read. Old English was a bit of a challenge, but worth it!
